Instagram

Longer Reels

Long-form video content continues to make a comeback with Instagram rolling out the ability to create reels of up to three minutes (previous limit was 90 seconds). Mirroring the TikTok trend for longer videos (who are now rewarding creators for uploading longer reels via their Creator Rewards Program), Instagram is even using prompts to encourage users to upload longer reels saying they perform better.

Send files in DMs

Instagram is currently working on the ability to send files in the DMs. While maybe not a game-changing update, it will make communication more streamlined and mean you will not need to divert from the app to sending documentation. Great for Instagram as it will keep users using the app for longer!

Larger carousels

One we are sure many users will be happy about – Instagram are experimenting with larger carousels with some users now able to add up to 15 images to their carousel posts compared to the previous limit of 10. This will enable users to have more flexibility with their carousel posts allowing them to share more images of an experience, expand on a story or go more in-depth on a subject.

Cross posting to Threads

This seems like the logical next step for Instagram due to the close relationship between the app and the Threads app. We will soon be able to cross-post from Instagram to Threads just like we can currently do with Instagram & Facebook. This will be a big time-saver for Threads users and will make it easier for people to repurpose content across the apps.

TikTok

TikTok Photo

It has been reported that TikTok are apparently developing a separate imaged-based app. Code & icons found in the TikTok app reference a new “TikTok Photo” app which according to the description is for ““like-minded people who enjoy photo posts.” The rivalry continues…watch your back Instagram!

Creator Search Insights

TikTok have rolled out a new feature called Creator Search Insights, which allows creators to search and track trending search terms on the platform. Another move to support its content creators, it provides users with valuable insights to inspire and enhance their content creation process.

X (fka twitter)

Video prioritization

Continuing their reinvention, X announced they are now a ‘‘video-first platform”. They have recently invested heavily in video content on the app, including new full-screen video format, video calling capabilities and long-form video uploads. It has also been reported that they are working on an app for smart TVs that would compete with YouTube.

LinkedIn

In-app games

App researchers have reported that LinkedIn are working on a new, in-app games feature. The update would enable users to take part in puzzle games in the app, with their scores then added to their company’s performance for competitive corporate rankings. While there is no launch date yet, we think a business-focused app investing in games may not seem logical, but it could be a fun way to exercise the brain (think Wordle and Words with Friends!).

Trending Audios

There have been some fun trending audios on Instagram this month! In particular, DJ remixes of classic songs is popular at the moment with users flocking to these catchy mash-up audios to create fun and engaging reels. Our favorite is from @thejamminkid with this cool mix of Celine Dion’s and The Whispers (check it out here). Browse some of the top reels created using the audio here for inspiration and try it out for yourself!

What’s Trending right now on Social Media?

Blue Monday Remix

This New Order remix audio of the classic song Blue Monday is everywhere on socials right now! While the catchy audio would work for any type of reel, the current trend is to act out a “fight” between two people with opposing opinions or points of view. Take a look at this example of a hairdresser vs a hair extensionist – we love their take on it!

Social Media is Fake

This “Social Media is fake” trend is currently doing the rounds on Instagram and it’s a super easy one to recreate for yourself! The concept is you have the title “Social Media is Fake” as the hook on a cover image with further text giving context and encouraging audiences to swipe to learn more. It’s clever as the hook is super catchy and makes you stop in your tracks. Users know it is either going to be controversial or vulnerable content which is super engaging for people. Check out @pinksparrowsocial’s take on it here:

Bridgerton

A trend prediction next! The long-awaited new season of Bridgerton is finally coming to Netflix next month (the first installment will be released mid-May) so this is your heads-up that Bridgerton content will soon be taking over our feeds! Think memes, gifs and quotes – featuring the wonderful Penelope and handsome Colin of course…we can’t wait! Here is some food for thought with a classic Bridgerton meme (courtesy of skincare brand Cocunat):
